Drone Delivery Market Size to Reach USD 6,833.8 Million in 2031

The drone delivery market size reached USD 513.4 Million in 2023 and is expected to register a revenue CAGR of 38.7% during the forecast period

December 26, 2024 Increasing expansion of e-commerce sector is the key factor driving revenue growth of global drone delivery market. Delivery drones have the potential to elevate the e-commerce sector significantly. Businesses can save both time and costs while addressing the growing demand for faster customer service by utilizing drones for last-mile deliveries. As a result, retailers are exploring using drones to reduce delivery times, aiming to enhance customer satisfaction, increase revenue, and improve conversion rates. The drone delivery market is growing due to the increasing demand for faster delivery options, advancements in drone technology, and the rising emphasis on reducing carbon emissions. Drones are becoming an increasingly important part of modern logistics. It is much more useful than the time-efficient alternative to traditional methods.

Companies in recent years are increasingly adopting drone technology to meet the rising consumer demand for fast, convenient, and on-demand delivery services. For example, Amazon launched large-scale drone delivery services in California in 2022. Wing, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, has already started using delivery drones in Texas, partnering with Walgreens and other local retailers. Walmart is aiming to expand its drone delivery network to 37 locations by the end of 2022, potentially reaching up to four million customers. Meituan, the leading food delivery company, plans to introduce its drone delivery services in Hong Kong. This move positions the company alongside other Chinese tech giants exploring opportunities for growth in the city as competition intensifies on the mainland.

However, the limited payload capacity and battery life of drones are restraining revenue growth of the market. Many commercial drones have restricted payload capacities, which limit the volume and weight of goods they can transport in a single trip. It reduces efficiency for businesses handling larger or bulk deliveries. Similarly, short battery life constrains the range and operational duration of drones. It makes them less viable for long-distance deliveries or multiple trips without frequent recharging. The combination of these technical barriers impacts the scalability and cost-effectiveness of drone delivery services and hinders the revenue growth of the market.

Key Highlights:

  • Hybrid drones segment is expected to register a fast revenue growth rate over the forecast period due to increasing adoption of hybrid drones owing to its ability to combine the strengths of both fixed-wing and rotary-wing drones. Hybrid drones offer extended flight ranges and longer operational times due to their energy-efficient designs and dual power sources. This feature makes them ideal for long-distance deliveries and operations in remote areas. Their capability to carry heavier payloads while maintaining stability and precision during takeoff enhances their adoption for various delivery applications, including e-commerce, healthcare, and industrial supplies.
  • Medical Aid Delivery segment is expected to account for a significant revenue share over the forecast period due to the rising need for fast, reliable, and efficient transportation for critical medical supplies, especially in emergencies and remote areas. Drones have proven invaluable in delivering life-saving items such as vaccines, blood products, medications, and diagnostic samples to regions with poor infrastructure or areas affected by natural disasters. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that around 2 billion people lack access to essential medicines and quality healthcare. Drones are helping to address this challenge by solving the last-mile delivery problem.
  • Asia Pacific is expected to register a fast revenue growth rate in the drone delivery market during the forecast period. due to the region’s booming e-commerce sector, high population density, and rapid urbanization, especially in countries such as China, Japan and India. In China, companies like Meituan and Alibaba are pioneering drone-based delivery systems, leveraging advanced technology to cater to the world’s largest population of digital buyers.
  • Some major companies in the global market report include Wing Aviation (Alphabet Inc.), Zipline, United Parcel Service, DHL Express, Prime Air (Amazon), Flytrex, Matternet, Drone Delivery Canada, JD Logistics, Volansi, Elroy Air, DroneUp SkyDrop, and Terra Drone.
  • On 06 September 2023, Matternet, the creator of a leading urban drone delivery system, announced that its partner, UPS Flight Forward (UPSFF), a subsidiary of UPS (United Parcel Service), has received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to operate the Matternet M2 drone beyond the visual line of sight (BVLOS) for package deliveries. This approval allows UPSFF to fly the Matternet M2 drone without the need for costly Visual Observers to monitor the airspace. Instead, UPSFF can use a ground-based RADAR system to detect potential air traffic conflicts and notify a remote pilot in command.
